Rethinking the Social Sciences: Research Between Reality and Virtuality
How virtual reality and artificial intelligence enable us to systematically shape human behavior, examine causal relationships, and investigate social interactions under conditions of complete ex-perimental control.
The lecture demonstrates how the integration of virtual reality and artificial intelligence propels the social sciences into a new dimension. Virtual reality creates experimental environments in which interactions can be precisely orchestrated and variables comprehensively controlled. Artificial intel-ligence not only enables the processing and analysis of large-scale datasets but also facilitates the real-time interpretation of responses—ranging from micro-expressive facial changes and physiolog-ical signals such as skin conductance, movement, or EEG activity to verbal communication, in-cluding its semantic and prosodic dimensions. In this way, social science experiments can be de-signed to be more realistic and interactive, while simultaneously allowing for the systematic inves-tigation of causal relationships and the identification of novel patterns of human behavior.
